Including Preschoolers with Disabilities: Access and Participation is a practical, engaging course for early childhood educators who are committed to creating inclusive classrooms. You’ll discover how to support children with disabilities by applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction to ensure all children can access the curriculum and participate meaningfully in daily activities. The course emphasizes the value of collaboration with families and educational teams to build responsive, supportive environments.
Through videos, readings, and reflective practice, you’ll strengthen your understanding of how to design inclusive learning experiences that respect and celebrate each child’s abilities, culture, language, and identity. The course aligns with Standard II of the CECE Standards of Practice and emphasizes responsive curriculum and pedagogy for diverse learners.
Deborah Chen, Ph.D, Professor Emerita, Early Childhood Special Education, California State University, Northridge. Dr. Chen coordinated the Early Childhood Special Education graduate program, supervised student teachers in early intervention and preschool settings, and taught courses. Her research and publications involve recommended practices in early intervention and early childhood special education, routines-based interventions, working with young children and families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, promoting communication with young children who have multiple disabilities, and supporting learning when young children have a visual impairment and/or hearing loss. Dr. Chen has provided workshops across the United States and internationally.
