Jonathan New is a seasoned trial lawyer and white-collar criminal defense attorney who represents clients in high-stakes civil, regulatory, and criminal investigations and litigation, with a particular focus on cross-border government investigations. He is regularly engaged by corporations, directors, and officers to advise and defend in matters involving complex financial instruments, accounting and securities law issues, insider trading, anti-money laundering (AML) and FCPA compliance, asset forfeiture, and cybercrime. Before entering private practice, Jonathan served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Division. He leverages his decades of experience as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and litigator to strategically present his clients’ positions in a light that most resonates with regulators, judges, and jurors. Jonathan also advises corporations on best practices for corporate compliance policies. Represented a Venezuelan diplomat charged with FCPA violations and money laundering in evidentiary hearings related to his assertion of a novel diplomatic immunity defense and challenge to extradition. Represented individuals and an entity in the DOJ criminal investigation into the alleged loss of billions of dollars by the Malaysian 1MDB Fund.
